When using a non-wireless pet fence, you may have some addition questions and concerns about the wiring. Maybe you are unsure of how much wire you are going to need or just not sure as to what kind of wire would work best with your yard. Here we will address the questions of how much wire to use, the kind of wire to use, and when to use which gauge of wire. If you require any further assistance, call our customer service line and talk to one of our many friendly customer service representatives.
How Much Wire Will You Need?
Before you buy more wire, check the product’s contents for how much wire is included in the pet fence package that you are purchasing. Most of the pet fences that we offer come with a standard 500 feet of wire. Also, check the wire chart below for how much wire you will be using. If you do not know how big the area is, now is a good time to find out.
Size of Yard
Length of Property Line
Extra Boundary Needed
1/2 – 1 Acre
500 to 1000 feet
1 – 3 Acres
1000 to 1500 feet
3 – 5 Acres

What Kind of Wire to Use?
It is important that ONLY Burial Approved wires be used with a pet fence. Since the wire is going to be outside and exposed to the elements, you will want a wire that is going to be strong enough to withstand the abuse. Burial Approved wires have a durable and long lasting waterproof Polyurethane coat, with a solid copper core.
Use 20-Gauge if:
- Yards with smooth, loose soil or clay.
- If laying the wire along a fence.
- If the yard has few trees and vegetation.
Use 18-Gauge if:
- Rocky soil is present.
- If installing the wire above ground.
- If the yard has many trees and vegetation.

The PIF-300C PetSafe Instant Fence Has Been Improved
We are proud to bring you the New PIF- 300. Equipped with the NEW PIF-275-19 collar. The receiver weighs only 2.5 ounces, and is 20% smaller, than the old IF-200 receiver. The PIF-275-19 collar has 6, adjustable levels of correction, as opposed to only 1 with the old IF-200 collar. The new PIF-275-19 collar has the new battery cap module, now making it a truly waterproof, receiver. Congratulations to PetSafe for making the necessary and long awaited improvements in the PIF-300. Whereas the old PIF-200 collar had great difficulty in adequately containing many dogs, and there were issues of water leakage, and there were problems using that large collar on smaller dogs, those have all been corrected.
The new collar receiver measurements are now 2 1/4″W, 1 5/8″ D, 1″ H.
